Financial Feasibility Study of Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) Cultivation Through a Reflective Approach

This study aims to analyze the financial feasibility of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) cultivation and to examine practical experience through a reflective approach. The problem formulations in this study are: (1) Is oyster mushroom cultivation financially feasible? and (2) How do researchers reflect as business actors in providing recommendations for developing oyster mushroom cultivation? The research was conducted at the Non-Timber Forest Products and Entrepreneurship Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Islam Makassar, from August to December 2025. A descriptive-analytical method with a reflective approach was used, involving direct participation of the researcher in all cultivation stages. Financial feasibility was assessed using Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Net Benefit-Cost Ratio (Net B/C), and Payback Period (PP). Results showed total initial investment of IDR 38,105,000 with annual depreciation of IDR 4,851,833. Fixed costs were IDR 33,000,000 and variable costs IDR 12,481,500 per year. The cost of production (HPP) was IDR 3,386 per unit with a selling price of IDR 35,000 per kilogram. Financial analysis revealed NPV of IDR 2,571,959 (>0), IRR of 16% (exceeding the 10% discount rate), Net B/C of 2.17 (>1), and a Payback Period of 10.2 months, all indicating financial viability. The reflective approach revealed that successful outcomes depended on production management quality, moisture control, substrate material efficiency, and meticulous cost recording. With optimal management, oyster mushroom cultivation represents a sustainable agribusiness opportunity.
