Quality of Sago Leaf (Metroxylon sp.) Charcoal Briquettes Using Sago and Tapioca Starch Adhesives

Abstract

Sago leaves are a promising biomass waste for charcoal briquette production. This research aimed to analyze the quality of charcoal briquettes made from sago leaves (Metroxylon sp) using two types and four concentrations of adhesives, based on Indonesian National Standards (SNI). The study also sought to determine the influence of adhesive type, adhesive concentration, and their interaction. The adhesives used were sago flour and tapioca flour, with concentrations varying at 5%, 7%, 9%, and 11%. A 2 × 4 factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications was employed. Briquette quality parameters tested included moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, calorific value, and density. The analysis showed that adhesive concentration significantly affected most briquette quality parameters. However, the type of adhesive and the interaction between adhesive type and concentration did not show significant effects. Briquettes made with sago flour adhesive tended to have higher moisture and volatile matter content, while those with tapioca flour adhesive exhibited better fixed carbon and calorific values. Notably, only the moisture content across all treatments met the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). This research indicates that natural adhesives like sago flour and tapioca flour can be effectively used in sago leaf charcoal briquette production. Nevertheless, further optimization is needed to meet national quality standards.
